Thunderbird

For those who don't heard the news, the default e-mail client in Ubuntu 11.10 was changed from Evolution to Thunderbird.

I haven't never like Evolution so this is the good news (though Thunderbird is not perfect as well, my default client is Gmail for now).

However, the question is "Why Change?"

After a few googling sessions, here are reasons:

After my decision of switching University IMP-based email system to Thunderbird, and my current behavior of using Google Calendar for appointment/deadline notification (both academic and non-academic), I'd like to see my schedule from Thunderbird as well.

This is possible via Mozilla Calendar project, which provides both standalone calendar client (Sunbird) and extension for Thunderbird (Lightning). No problem for network syncing since the present world is using iCal format and Google Calendar provides it, definitely.

A Linux.com's review of Sunbird/Lightning 0.5 tell me that Lightning doesn't support read/write function of networked calendar. That means I can't put new event in Google Calendar via Thunderbird. Fortunately, all problem can be solved by Provider for Google Calendar extension.

ปัญหาคือเว็บเมลที่ใช้ดันเป็น IMP และโดยส่วนตัวผมไม่ชอบ IMP มานาน (เชื่อว่ามีคนไม่ชอบอีกเยอะ และนี่เป็นเหตุผลหนึ่งที่ทำให้ Gmail ดัง เพราะมันเป็น "Webmail done right") สมัยอยู่เกษตรก็เป็น IMP ซึ่งเราเลี่ยงไปใช้ pine/mutt แทนได้ แต่เอาจริงแล้วแทบไม่เคยใช้เมลมหาวิทยาลัยเลย

ทางเลือกนอกจากยอมทนใช้ IMP คือหาว่ามหาวิทยาลัยมี POP3/IMAP ให้หรือเปล่า (ซึ่งส่วนมากมักจะมี) แล้วหนีไปใช้ Thunderbird แทน แต่ระหว่างค้นหาชื่อ POP3/IMAP server จากเว็บมหาวิทยาลัยก็ไปเจอกับหน้านี้ เข้าให้ (รวมไปถึงหน้านี้กับหน้านี้ด้วย)

ตอนนี้ผมกำลังเริ่มลังเล อาจจะดร็อปเรียนซักเทอม แล้วไปขอสมัครเป็นเด็กฝึกงานสำนักคอมน่าจะรุ่งกว่า

ไอคอนดู Vista ดี ชอบอันนี้มากกว่าธีมของ Firefox 2.0 ซึ่ง contrast มันน้อยไปหน่อย

หนึ่งในโซลูชันที่มองไว้คือ Thunderbird + Lightning Extension ซึ่งเป็นโครงการคู่ขนานกับ Sunbird

ตอนนี้ Lightning ออก 0.1 RC1 เลยเอามาลองดูความคืบหน้า

ฟีเจอร์เริ่มจะพอไหว แต่ UI ยังห่วยอยู่มาก ยังอีกไกลกว่าจะได้ระดับ Outlook หรือ Evolution
