From March 2009 Presentation by Project Renaissance, the initiative to re-imaging OOo, surprising demographics of OOo users.

• OOo is used by ¾ of the users at home
• On average, users are between 41 and 50 years old
• ¼ of all users are 51 years old or older

The first point is understandable, OOo still have compatibility issues with Microsoft Office so companies hesitate to use it in work.

The second and third point are amazing. I have no clue at all why many OOo users are the elders.

Continue from point #1, is it a good strategy to shift OOo focus from work to home use? For example, make it feel more like 'Keynote' than 'PowerPoint'.

สมัยนี้มีกูเกิลแสนสบาย ค้นหาแล้วได้ความว่า โดยทั่วไปนั้นใช้

ปรากฎว่าไม่รอด เพราะ "โดยทั่วไป" ชาวบ้านเค้าใช้ Excel กัน เลยพยายามต่ออีกพักใหญ่ ได้คำตอบ ว่าเป็น

ปัญหาใหม่ที่พบคือ ยังไม่รู้วิธีอ้างชื่อ sheet ในเซลล์ ในกรณีที่ชื่อ sheet มีช่องว่าง (เช่น "debit card") ก็เลยใช้วิธี workaround ตั้งแบบให้มันไม่มีช่องว่างไปก่อน

ส่วนรายจ่ายเดี๋ยวขอไปแยกหมวดหมู่ แล้วจะมาวิเคราะห์อย่างละเอียดต่อสาธารณะ

เอา OpenOffice.org Writer มาทำเป็น text editor เขียนข่าวเป็น markdown ไปลง Blognone ปรากฎว่าฟีเจอร์​ AutoCorrect ของมันฉลาดเกิน ต้องปิดทิ้งเกือบหมด

อันที่ปิดไป

• URL Recognition เป็นอะไรที่ผมปิดเป็นอย่างแรกเสมอเมื่อใช้ OOo
• TWo INitial CApital มันจะมีศัพท์เทคนิคหลายคำที่อยู่ในฟอร์มนี้ (นึกตอนนี้ไม่ออก)
• Replace bullets with * มีปัญหากับ markdown อย่างมาก
• Replace "standard" quotes with "custom" quotes มีปัญหากับ HTML attribute

สรุปว่าเป็นปัญหาคลาสสิค (WSYIWYG vs plaintext with code) ถ้าคนเขียนรู้ตัวว่ากำลังทำอะไรอยู่ ฟีเจอร์พวกนี้จะไม่จำเป็นและกลายเป็นเรื่องน่ารำคาญไป (แต่ในมุมกลับกัน ถ้าผู้ใช้ที่ไม่รู้อะไรมากนักมาใช้ มันก็จะเป็นเรื่องสะดวก คือถึงผมจะไม่ค่อยได้ใช้ WYSIWYG และเครื่องอำนวยความสะดวกเหล่านี้ แต่บางครั้งบางกรณีมันก็ช่วยเหมือนกัน ต้องว่ากันเป็นงานๆ ไป)

After downloading OpenOffice.org 3.0 build m26 to verify the Cmd+Space bug on Macintosh, I then see the new application icon. Huge improvement over the old gray one.

While the speed of improvement is not fast as Firefox, OpenOffice.org is getting better and better.

While I'm reading OpenOffice weekly progression, there is a line about "Icon redesign – Galaxy project". For an user-interface apprentice, it's very interesting.

The samples from OpenOffice.org Galaxy page is quite nice.

Current OpenOffice builds on some systems (e.g. Ubuntu) replace old icon set with Tango. While I think Tango is great iconset, I like this one more.

Galaxy information is very scarce. It seems the designers still want to keep it internal. I can find a blog mentioning about it and that blog was written in 2006! Some mailinglist conversations also state that this project is still going on.

Hope Sun can make it in time of OpenOffice.org 3.0. Can't wait to use this iconset.
