A research from HP Labs suggests that Long Tail might not be true anymore. On the 2.0 "social" sites, in this case Digg and YouTube, the popular content dominates.

The question is, if that hypothesis is true:

• How does the "social factor" render the long tail effect obsolete?
• Does it mean the virtual "word of mouth" (e.g. Digg count or YouTube viewer number) has much more influence than random Google query?
• Do we need to care about SEO anymore or practice on Digging technique instead?

I have no answer at all, at the moment.

One more thing. From Ars Technica:

the study suggests that popularity on these sites is a self-reinforcing process. For Digg, the dynamics are extremely rapid. By 24 hours after a popular story is submitted, the number of votes it attracts can be used to predict the votes it has at 30 days with high accuracy.

This paragraph reminds me about Chaos Theory. Are they related?

This is my quick and dirty chart to see the competition inside Thailand web industry. Data is gathered from TrueHits.net on 22 May 2008 and only top 100 sites ordered by Unique IP.

My rough summary

• Coincidentally, web sites in Top 10 need to have more than 100k UIP/day. (This will definitely be changed in near future)
• As everyone in Thai web industry should know, #1 (sanook) and #2 (kapook) are standout from the rest.
• The next biggest gap is between #8 (bloggang) and #9 (playpark). Both are different by ~50k UIP. We might say that the most visited sites in Thailand are Top 8.
• The distribution of #10 to #100 is interesting. Considering only this information, it's very likely to be Long Tail.

My remarks and suggestions

• Many popular web sites in Thailand (e.g. Google.co.th) are not listed in TrueHits ranking
• For full statistics of each site, site owner need to pay more to TrueHits. Some sites (e.g. Pantip) prefer to be ranked only in limited amount.
• I should add more sites to this chart, probaly Top 1000. To prove that Long Tail effect still continue in wider range.
• Cross-checking by Alexa (and some other internet marketing) statistic is preferred.
• Categorization of each sites in the rank is also preferred. To see the distribution by type.

Abstract:

There is no sophisticated online election reporting system available. The primary source for election result is still TV and reported by centralized government body or media empire.

This project proposes an election reporting system which:

• gather data by massive volunteers, "wisdom of the crowds" aka "long tail" method via proper communication channels
• represent the election result in online visualized format, which enables more accessibility, comparability and accountability
• guarantee acceptable level of accuracy
• highly customizable for various kinds of election, can be easily reuse in different environment
