ในโลกของ Desktop Environment แนวทางของ KDE นั้นไม่ถูกจริตผมนัก

สมัย KDE 3.x ยังพอใช้ได้แม้ว่าไม่ค่อยชอบ แต่ตอน KDE 4.0 ออก เคยเอามาลอง แล้วพบว่า "เข้าขั้นแย่" (KDE 4.0 and Back Again)

ล่าสุดซื้อโน้ตบุ๊กใหม่ เลยถือโอกาสเอา KDE มาลองอีกสักรอบ คราวนี้เป็น KDE 4.3 แล้ว น่าจะสมบูรณ์มากขึ้น

ดิสโทรที่เอามาลองคือ OpenSUSE 11.2 กับ Mandriva 2010.0 ครับ ถ้าใครมีดิสโทร KDE ที่ดีกว่านี้โปรดแนะนำ (ผมกะลอง PCLinuxOS ด้วย ปรากฎว่ารุ่นล่าสุดมันเก่าไปนิด เลยไม่เอาดีกว่า ส่วน MEPIS โหลดแล้วไฟล์ขาดกลาง เลยไม่ได้ลอง)

ความทุกข์ของคนใช้ Linux ครับ

เรื่องมีอยู่ว่า Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala ใกล้ออกเต็มทน ผมก็โหลดตัวเบต้าสุดท้ายมาลองเล่นตามธรรมเนียม ทีนี้ขั้นตอนที่สำคัญของการเพิ่ม productivity คือต่อจอนอกทำงานไปด้วย ในเครื่องเดียวกันนี้ถ้าเป็น Windows 7 มีแค่

• เอาสาย VGA จิ้ม
• กด Ctrl+P
• เลือก Extend Display

จบ ทุกอย่างลงตัวสวยงาม just work หน้าจอถูกขยายเพิ่มไปให้ ภาพพื้นหลังถูกปรับขนาดให้พอเหมาะกับทั้งสองจอ

Ubuntu Report Card (2009)

One of best Ubuntu review I've ever read. It's not a review of any Ubuntu release but it reviews the whole development pace of Ubuntu between 8.04-9.04 (also 9.10 alpha). Quite interesting.

I agree with the author in almost every point (except the 'Performance' category since I upgraded my laptop so it's not scientific measurement).

The 'Appearance' score can't be more true. New desktop scheme has been proposed and postponed in every single release and it has never happened.

My final thought on appearance: whoever needs 'Help' on the panel? Removing it is the first thing I've done after installation.

Honestly, I'm bored with Opera fanboys who always say that "Opera is the first browser that does xyz feature." If Opera is good as acclaim, the market share will show us the real truth.

As a good geek, I've tried Opera several times since its incarnation. Can't use it longer than few minutes. I think I have no bias. I have no problem for browsing with Safari, Chrome or even IE. But for Opera, it sucks.

(Btw, whoever wants a widget in browser? BitTorrent? email client?)

Straight to the point, it's my job to try Opera 10. If it's good enough, I'll change my mind, review it and advocate it. Anyway, the moment it was starting for the first time, I know that was hell. Opera is written on Qt and running Qt application on GTK+ is sin.
