Microsoft Profit by Products

A very useful chart from Business Insider. They just track Microsoft profit by division (business unit) and put the number on the chart. Good visualization.

For a better illustration, I put another layer on this graph: Microsoft products launch date. You can clearly see the immediate profit rising in Windows/Office division after Vista/Office 2007 launch in Jan 2007 and then again in Oct 2009 after Windows 7 general availability.

Online Services division had a biggest loss in Jun 2009, probably due to big marketing budget of Bing relaunch. I can't find why Entertainment and Devices went down in Jun 2007, maybe just only operation loss.

I have looked over the figures for 2007 and the only thing I can figure out is the expenses that would have been incurred in getting the Microsoft Surface computing platform ready. It seems fit into the time slot, but there is no evidence that my thought is correct.
Though from the MSFT Annual Report 2009 - Microsoft Corporation this statement is made
"Because of our integrated business structure, operating costs included in one segment may benefit other segments, and therefore these segments are not designed to measure operating income or loss directly related to the products included in each segment."
So at this stage its a guess by me...
