Rise of Social Media: Blognone Case

It begins from my curious of site referer over times on Blognone.com. But in the end, I found out some interesting remarks. (Click on each picture to enlarge, all statistics are from 1 Jan 08 till today (28 Jun 09)

Top of refering site is Google. Growth on "visits" is steady and reflects the same ratio in total growth.

Pantip, one of Thailand's biggest site, ranks #5 on the list. The pattern of traffic is expected: a random spike load.

The most interesting are "new media" sites like Twitter and Facebook. Twitter now rank #3 on the list (just after Google and Google Thailand) and the growth is rapid.

However, Facebook is the top gainer in last 18 months. While the absolute "visits" number is still relatively low (#38) but the growth pattern is exponential. The top referral path is /home.php (as expected), then /ext/share.php.

Two assumptions:

  1. More Thai users on Facebook (almost everyone I know ditch Hi5 now and come to Facebook for quiz and Flash games)
  2. Blognone readers tend to share news item on Facebook.

Because many people link their twitter feeds to Facebook stream perhaps?

Twitter is not just about micro-media. ... the shortened link may just be the most powerful type of micro-media there is."
